Just downloaded the software and when I "check if dial idol is working" I get a message that says...that perhaps some other program is using the modem etc...
Well I havent a CLUE... I connect with broadband and I even uninstalled AOL..just in case that was the culprit..
Am running XP and I just got the PC..so I really havent installed anything that uses the modem...
Got any suggestions?????

Do you have any fax software loaded up? Does Hyperterminal work?

If no to both - Config/Options - check the generate a log - dial and send it to me.

Also - try the DialIdol button and tell me what happens.

3/13/2007 11:27:51 PM : An error occured accessing your modem. This may occur if another program is using the modem. Please check for fax software or other software that may be interefering.
3/13/2007 11:27:54 PM : bfDesiredResultReceived:False
3/13/2007 11:27:54 PM : ifTimeout:3
3/13/2007 11:27:54 PM : bgCancel:False

I just ran into the same issue; I tried reinstalling .NET Framework 2.0, but that didn't help; Hyperterminal worked fine, and my log was identical to AllOut007's post.

My problem turned out to be that Microsoft Fax (which is installed in many XP configurations) wasn't configured to send faxes; I'm not sure why that would affect DialIdol but not Hyperterminal, but it apparently did. I just rebuilt my PC with a new installation of XP MCE; since the initial poster said he had a brand-new PC (and the other had a similar log), this is probably the problem.

To fix the problem, go to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Fax > Fax Console. You should see the Fax Configuration Wizard; please complete it. (If you don't, choose Tools > Configure Fax... to start the wizard.) Once you do this, "Is DialIdol Working?" should work properly.

I was hoping this was my problem too - but I configured the fax and I still get the same 'no dial tone' error. Maybe I'll pull out a regular old cord and just stick it in the jack - does the ethernet cord not work with the regular modem?

Ethernet cord? An ethernet cable should not even fit into the modem jack on your computer, or the phone jack on the wall. Are you sure you're plugging it into the correct jacks?

Ethernet cable is what runs the dsl. It doesn't plug into the modem jack. I need to have ethernet connected for the internet...and a SEPARATE phone line type one also into the jack for dial idol with the modem. Is that right? Is that where my problem lies - what I didn' have the separate line for the standard modem also plugged in?

I should mention that we just got DSL for the first time a couple of months ago, and I *really* don't get how it works. We brought the phone co. in to put in extra jacks...he tried to explain some of it to me but my head wasn't in it at the time.

How DSL works: Thought I would share for fun :)

http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/dsl2.htm

The first picture says the simplest I think on how it works. Voice calls use the 0-4 KHz range and DSL uses the larger range 240 KHz to 1.5MHz.
Think of it like a road and an 8 lane highway going to the same place. More traffic can fit through the larger highway.

Hope that helps some. You can learn a lot from a google search.

Configuring the fax service worked for me once, but after that I couldn't get it to work again. Tonight, I finally got something when I used Task Manager to terminate the fxssvc.exe process (Microsoft Fax Service); even though it restarted, DialIdol started working again.

If just stopping fxssvc.exe alone doesn't work, try it again. Also try right-clicking it in the process list and choosing End Process Tree (not just End Process).

There is clearly still a problem because Microsoft Fax doesn't affect Hyperterminal; only DialIdol and one of my modem test utilities seem to be affected. Why does DialIdol have a problem with this program? My all-in-one doesn't have a fax modem, so I need the fax program for sending occasional faxes; I'd be more likely to abandon DialIdol than Microsoft Fax.

Seems To me many many people are having this same problem incuding me. I have asked for help to no avail. The votes seem low and maybe this is why. No one can use this program. I do not have any fax software installed and my modem dials out just fine using hypertermial. I sure would like to use this if possible. I am using a HP Laptop with XP Media edition. I have Comcast Phone. i tried hooking a phone line from the phone modem straight to the computers modem but this did not work. I do not seem to have MS Fax becasue it does not show up anywhere. Very Frustrated :-( I don't want to sound ungratefull to the creators of this program, I would just like to be able to use it.

OK people this bug is common but I can't reproduce it so I can't fix it. If someone wants to work with me to fix it then email me your instant messenger address and when I have time to work on it (usually late morning/early afternoon on weekends) I will start pinging people to see if they are online and can work with me to fix it. I can't say which weekend it will be that I get to it either but this one is looking decent for working on this bug. I'll know better Thursday.

And while I would like to work on other problems too - the problem I am talking about here is the modem in use messages people get.

Okay, I'm pretty sure that this is going to be limited to Media Center edition machines. I have isolated the ehsched.exe process as causing this problem. I can't say why this is the problem, but I can say that I am consistently able to pass a modem test when I terminate this process. After rebooting, when the process has restarted, the modem test fails once again.

I'm unable to find enough information about the ehched.exe process to determine why it could cause this problem. Maybe you have some inside knowledge as to why this would happen.

The fix to the problem at the moment seems to be to terminate the ehsched.exe process. This will allow DialIdol to work until you reboot.

Let me know if this helps anyone else.

Okay, it seems that the ehsched.exe process holds onto the modem because it's attempting to use the modem for caller ID. Here is a response from another web site I found:

quote:
To permanently switch off Caller ID Notifications proceed like this:
- Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Media Center.
- On the Media Center Start menu, click Settings, click Messenger and Caller ID, click Notifications.
- The Notifications page should have a group of three radio buttons labeled "Telephone calls with Caller ID", "All telephone calls" and "None".
- Click "None".
- Restart the system and then see whether FaxMan can now find the modem.

I have not tested this on my home machine yet, but I will let you know as soon as I have done so and what my results are.
